Growing up, there were never a shortage of projects, large and small. My dad, a born DIYer, rarely hired out any project. If he couldn't build it or fix it, it probably couldn't be done by anyone.
That's the kind of tradition I grew up in. One of the earliest projects I remember helping with was finishing the basement of our family home. That pretty much entailed everything. Putting up and finishing drywall was an easy enough start for a kid. Of course it progressed into laying brick for the new fireplace, running electrical wiring, etc.
Not a bad way to start for a pre-teen.
And things have only progressed since. Having spent hours and hours watching and helping, I've now moved into planning and executing my own projects. My dad is still often involved, as we have a new blank canvas for a whole new era of weekend warrior projects.
